Up and Down the Tyne on a Bike

Twenty odd years ago, I would cycle into Town along the River, and listen to Grace Jones, The Smiths, and Tom Waits on a Walkman - which was then rather cutting edge. I aspire to do so again. Here's a link showing the route, plus a nice loop for Town based cyclists.

  1. Thanks for the Bikely link Garry - the Google Earth flight along the route is excellent.

I cycle this route pretty regularly from South Shields and whilst riding it yesterday picked semi ripe figs from a massive tree I've had my eye on for a while mid way along the route.

  2. Whereabouts is that, then? It's quite difficult to get figs to fruit this far north. Do you think the "semi-ripe figs" are producing viable seeds?

  3. The fig tree is along the Quayside in Newcastle on the same street as the Tyne Bar and about 150 metres north of the Bar up a slight hill.

It's where Malling St. meets Ford St. behind Topsy's scarab wall - the tree itself is in an old triangular shaped 'allotment' area but it overhangs the boundary fence and I picked the fruit from low branches on the road outside.

If you look on Google Earth it's on the other side of the road to a white T-shaped building which is presently being demolished.

I'm not sure on the viability of the seeds but the tree is massive and is as mature as it's going to get I would say - I suspect there must be a warm micro climate around there...
