Speechless

Sometimes, I'm left speechless. Almost. The most annoying thing about t his news story is the picture it conjures up of non-English speakers coming here, living the life of Reilly on the dole, and, presumably, sitting around all day on drugs, watching telly programmes from back home on satellite. FFS. The truth is, it's really difficult to get into an English class - I'm speaking as someone who spends his Wednesday evenings turning people away at my College's enrolment sessions. And things are going to get worse next year .

molly siesta , originally uploaded by Pig Sty Avenue . Cute, eh? She's got a cough just now - me too. Having a bit of a holiday from the beginning-to-walk business. She almost-walks , instead.

I wish...

...I'd kept my mouth shut about getting poultry back at the allotment.

february buds , originally uploaded by Pig Sty Avenue . It just can't be right, can it? This feels like February in Catalunya. The afternoon sun is actually hot. That's my subjective view. Anecdotal. This isn't, though. I'm seriously thinking about planting an olive grove, now.

Chickens?

Over the winter, the allotmenteer's mind naturally turns to spring. We're thinking of getting some hens . Apart from the eggs, hens are great at keeping down nasties. The garden's now wick with leather jackets , for example. The idea is to let a couple of hens peck around your feet whilst your digging. Or, if you've got a pest ridden bit of ground, put their run there for a while.
